Without knowledge of your current direction, you could ultimately believe that there isn’t one.
While I put a topographic map on my GPS unit, I much prefer to depend on a paper map. You can find some wonderfully detailed maps directly on the DNR website. They are excellent, free, and you can cut and paste them into one image to hand tailor a map specific to the area you are traversing.
Just go to this site, http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/1,1607,7-153-10371_14793-31264--,00.html, click on the county of interest, and zero in on the area you will be exploring.
